What is fast food and why is it so popular?

Fast food - History
Although fast-food restaurants are often seen as a mark of modern technomicrobiological culture, they are probably as old as the grandmothers of cities themselves, with their style varying from culture to cultare. Ancient Roman cities had bread-and-olive handstands, East Asian cultures feature pot-noodle shops. Flat bread, and falafel are characteristic of the Middle East.

The modern history of fast food
is connected with the history of the hamburger, as the earliest fast-food outlets sold hamburgers as their primary product. The American company White Castle is generally credited with opening the first fast-food outlet in 1921, selling hamburgers for five cents apiece. [1] White Castle later added five holes to each beef patty to increase its surface area and speed cooking times. White Castle was successful from its inception and spawned numerous competitors.
McDonald's, the largest fast-food chain in the world and the brand most associated with the term "fast food," did not appear until 1948 when a hot dog stand under the McDonald's brand name opened in San Diego. Ray Kroc, the distributor of an industrial milkshake mixer that the original McDonald's used, joined the founders of McDonald's in 1954 and began expanding the franchise. [2]
Wendy's, founded in 1972, is credited with pioneering the use of the "drive-thru" window to allow consumers to purchase fast food without having to park or exit their cars. [3]

What is fast food and why is it so popular?
Fast food is any food that is quick, convenient, and usually inexpensive. You can buy fast food just about anywhere that sells food and snacks. Vending machines, drive-thru restaurants, and 24 hour convenience stores are probably the most common places to find fast food. It's so popular because for under $5.00 you can usually get a filling meal. However, fast food is inexpensive because it is usually made with cheaper ingredients such as high fat meat, refined grains, and added sugar and fats, instead of nutritious foods such as lean meats, fresh fruits, and vegetables.

Found this song quite suitable to our discussion, silly but funny. Enjoy =)

  2. Good day guys! I'm glad to be the first to comment in our blog=). I hope we will soon have some hot discussion here. Well back to the topic, regarding the "Fast food is any food that is quick, convenient, and usually inexpensive" , I dont really agree with it! This is because the cheapest set meal selling in Mc Donald's already RM5.95. You can have a satisfying and nice meal in Pusanika with 1 healthy veggie and a crunchy fried chicken
    only with RM4!

  5. YUP,totally agree with peggi that fast food is the main causes to get obesity dan diabetes. Some of the fast outlets have menu items that that are more nutritious than orders, but many people do not order the most nutritious items. The menu items from most fast food outlets have many calories which put weight on the customers.

  6. According to Hanis's post - Fast food is any food that is quick, convenient, and usually inexpensive. Do u agree with this definition? If we accept this definition then nasi lemak and cap fun (chinese mixed rice) can be considered as fast food. They are "quick, convenient and usually inexpensive". Otherwise, the definition has to be adjusted to suit the Malaysian context.

  7. I would be more interested in the history of Fast food in Malaysia rather than in America. When did fast food appear on the Malaysian food scene? What were the first fast food outlets in Malaysia? What kind of food do they sell? Why were fast food popular in Malaysia? Is it because it's QUICK, CHEAP and INEXPENSIVE or are there other reasons? Perhaps, it's the new taste, the advertisement and the promotion or the new and clean restaurant or ?????

  8. Food is diffrent form in diffrent country. In America their major comsumtion of food is meat, breads and potatoes, while Asian prefer rice and noodles. Both take carbohydrates but in different form. Burgers and fries are western fast food, nasi lemak and roti canai is our local malaysia fast food. Different culture produce diffrent fast food =)
